Pets in Telluride

Telluride, like most mountain towns in Colorado, is a community that loves pets! It would seem unusual to walk around town or hike without running into a wide variety of canine friends. In fact, some local retailers allow pets inside the stores. A few shops also offer “treats” for the doggy shoppers. Below are just some of the options and venues open to you and your pet when you stay in Telluride:

Town Park - When the local playing fields aren’t being used for some sporting event or for one of the many Telluride festivals, feel free to bring your dog, throw a Frisbee or ball and play fetch with your dog. The same works in the snow during winter as well!

The River Trail – With a total of three miles of trail that meanders throughout Telluride and along the San Miguel River, The River Trail is very popular in both summer and winter. This is a perfect trail to enjoy with your pet. The river trail is adjacent to the San Miguel River (water dogs LOVE swimming here) and winds past Town Park.

The Gondola – This unique public transportation system connects the towns of Telluride and Mountain Village – for free. Dogs are welcome to ride the gondola with their owners, as every 3rd gondola cart is pet-friendly!

Hiking – Telluride, Mountain Village, and the surrounding area is renowned for the hundreds of hiking trails in and around the region. All Telluride hiking trails are pet-friendly. Select a day-hike or even a trail that can be done in an hour! Below are a few of the more popular Telluride trails:

-Jud Wiebe – Starts at the top of N. Aspen Street in Telluride and takes about 2 hours to complete. Spectacular views of Telluride and the box canyon! Intermediate to difficult (steep).

-Bear Creek Trail – A nice, easy hike (about 1.5 hours) that starts from Town Park in Telluride. You can also start from the Riverside condos on S. Pine Street. Enjoy cool temperatures and an amazing waterfall at the end!

-Lizard Head Area – Located about 30 minutes drive from Telluride, Colorado, there are a lot of hiking trail options here for all abilities!
